Variable Frequency Drive Cable Shield Termination Kit

Watteredge offers a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Shield Termination Kit designed to properly terminate a VFD cable’s overall shield. It also provides a low impedance path at high frequency for common mode current created by the drive to return to the inverter via the shield, minimizing potential problems due to uncontrolled currents.

Proper shield termination is critical to helping to prevent premature motor failure due to bearing fluting as well as intermittent operational issues associated with communication and control equipment located in close proximity to uncontrolled common mode ground currents.

A properly terminated shield is critical as it allows the shield to become a low impedance path for high frequency common mode current to flow from the motor back to the inverter.  This controlled path stops current from traveling through motor bearings and building infrastructure which can cause problems with other sensitive manufacturing automation equipment like PLCs, controls, and communication systems located throughout an entire facility.

This kit can be used with copper tape shield VFD cables and copper braid/aluminum foil shield VFD cables. They may be also used on both copper tape shields and copper braid shields and where cable is installed in conduit as well used in conjunction with cable glands.

Proper termination requires the cable to be terminated at both the drive end at the motor end of the cable.

Tape: Conducting copper foil tape conforming to UL 510.
Braid: Flexible tinned copper braid bonding strap with attached lug. Individual wires conform to ASTM B33
Spring: Constant force spring
